There are so many benefits to choosing an online learning course that easy to understand why it’s become the most popular option in the past couple of years. Initially it was out of necessity as social distancing was mandated, and now there is growing evidence that pregnant families are the biggest winners.
The past couple of years has seen a revolution in the acceptance of working, learning, and playing online. Everyone is familiar with Zoom as one of the most popular online platforms, and have become used to the convenience and flexibility of being able to press a button and accessing a whole world of opportunity.
What you consider to be the biggest benefit might be different to the next person- after all we come to this point in our lives from different places.
For some people it will be the convenience, for some online learning is allowing them the flexibility of choosing a course that fit the times and dates that suit them best. Others might recognise that they don’t have to be tied to a course that doesn’t align with their philosophy just because it’s local. And whether it’s comfort, safety, ease, or simply being able to choose the best educator in the sector without being restricted by geography, there are advantages for everyone.
Let’s have a closer look at what you have to gain from choosing an online antenatal course.
Just as most of Australia is coming out of lockdown and Australians are loving being able to be around people, many pregnant women and families are recognising that they don’t want to risk their health and the health of their unborn baby for the opportunity to sit in a small room, with a bunch of strangers.
Whilst there are many wonderful and long-awaited opportunities to embrace friends and families once again, the reality is, the threat of Covid has not gone away. It’s become clear that as a society we have to accept that Covid will be active in the community for a long time to come. And it makes sense that we can’t put a hold on businesses getting back to trading indefinitely. But pregnant women are now understood to be amongst the most vulnerable groups, if they acquire the infection.
So, changing previous habits and having more choice over certain areas in life has been a clear advantage.
Many of my clients talk about feeling like they are not in control over so many aspects of their lives right now, that being able to control when and how they access antenatal education has been a real positive for them.
This has to be one of the most common benefits, especially when you’ve researched and found a course that ticks all your boxes- but it’s not possible to get to. A Focused Birth offers online, live, and interactive hypnobirthing classes that just aren’t available in many regional or remote towns. Clients from every state in Australia can enjoy the comprehensive preparation because they have access to a computer.
Some online courses are simply prerecorded presentations, and they can be a great option offering the most flexibility- not being restricted by dates or times. It’s an option available from A Focused Birth too. You can be reassured that should you, or your partner, be unable to attend a session even at the last minute - you will have access to a recording of the session. I’ve had several families who have been having to isolate after being a close contact of a positive Covid case which would have meant them missing an in-person class. Now we are more free to mix with people and the usual viral illnesses are spreading again, anyone with simple cold like symptoms will also be denied access to in-person classes. And families who for whatever reason have not been vaccinated, cannot attend in-person sessions.
Another advantage of this online option is that people who experience social anxiety don’t have to meet others, they can simply get the information they need to help them feel prepared.
And I find that clients with a high profile are more likely to choose the online option. Whether it’s individual tailored classes or the pre-recorded option, it’s helpful in protecting privacy and prevents the possibility of revealing an undisclosed celebrity pregnancy. As a Registered Midwife you can be reassured that Justine maintains strict confidentiality at all times. The identity of all the high-profile clients she has worked with in the hospital setting or in her private work remains exactly that- PRIVATE. Whether you are a CEO or someone in the public arena you can trust your information is safe with me.
In every group there is always a reluctant partner. Someone who believes there is no reason for them to attend antenatal classes. And the reasons for this might be varied. They might think hypnobirthing techniques are only relevant for the person going through labour to know. Or perhaps they have a really busy schedule, and it just seems like it’s a poor use of their time. Some partners have to travel for work and can’t be available together for a series of in person classes. But the beauty of an online antenatal education series is that you can attend from anywhere. You only have to read the reviews to know how most partners are completely surprised about how rewarding the classes were for them specifically. From techniques to calm a busy mind, to understanding the impact of language in all areas of life. From knowing what to do to best support their partner in labour, to knowing about newborn essentials.
Whilst hypnobirthing is growing in popularity there is still a disparity in the quality of information shared. There is so much stuff that you need to buy for a new baby that you want to make sure that the course you choose to help you prepare, will be an investment that you will never regret. Many hypnobirthing courses are simply delivered by an enthusiastic mum who wants everyone to have the wonderful easy experience she had. Whilst this is a great start, we all know that we can’t plan for exactly how our births will go, so it’s great to have someone with the expertise to give you a comprehensive understanding of what you need to know however your experience pans out.
Being unprepared is one of the most common criticisms of traditional hypnobirthing courses and can lead women to have a sense of failure and being out of control - both of which are red flags for birth trauma and postnatal depression. A Focused Birth course covers all the of incredible skills and techniques that can empower you to achieve a birth without intervention - if that’s what your preference is. And it also covers all you need to know when things don’t go to plan. Approx 1 in 3 births in Australia are by caesarean. Approx 1in 4 births are assisted by forceps or vacuum. Approx 1in 3 women have an epidural in labour. It’s really important that families have some understanding of these procedures and interventions - hoping for a birth free of intervention is not enough. The more you are informed about such things and what you might do to avoid them or enhance your experience if it becomes part of your labour and birth means you are much more likely to have a positive birth experience. It’s no coincidence that a large proportion of women choosing A Focused are from the Health Care professions. Previous group members have been medical doctors, nurses, physios, dentists, PhD doctors, psychologists, anaesthetists, and social workers. All people who have rigorously researched an online hypnobirthing course, that is evidence based and comprehensive.
You are not restricted to the hypnobirthing training closest to you- by doing A Focused Birth online hypnobirthing course you can learn with the best in the whole of Australia. Justine is not only an experienced midwife, but she is also a Registered Clinical Hypnotherapist. Her knowledge and skills are unique, with additional qualifications in Psychology, NLP, and Strategic Psychotherapy. The ability to combine an antenatal course with individual sessions to address any underlying anxieties has the potential to change your life not just your birth.
Finally, perhaps one of the most immediate benefits of an online hypnobirthing course is the convenience of attending from the comfort of your own home. Justine warmly invites participants to do whatever they need to, to make it an enjoyable experience. With her great sense of humour and friendly approach she is happy to have people eating their dinner during a class, or enjoying multiple cups of tea. Many couples enjoy a Saturday morning session snuggled up in their own bed. You can be standing, bouncing on a fit ball, sitting at the kitchen table, reclined on your couch, or a combination of all during a session. You don’t have to drive anywhere, allow time for traffic issues, or finding a parking space. You don’t have to perch on foldable chairs with no back support, or participate in awkward group exercises if you don’t want to. You are in control of how much you choose to be seen, and you always have the opportunity to have your questions answered immediately.

Justine is so knowledgeable and delivers the course in such a friendly and easy to understand way. She is super supportive and very reliable. As a first time mum, there were lots of things I had no idea about and she made me feel comfortable asking any question I thought of. We have some extra medical conditions with bub and Justine has helped me to find strategies to understand and my emotions and empower me to remain strong throughout. I can’t thank her enough. Highly recommended!

Hey Justine. Just wanted to say a massive thank you again for everything you did for us prior to the birth, you really helped me massively. She is doing great, very lucky to have a great sleeper and great eater. She's feeding great and learning very quickly. (partner) says a massive thank you too, advice and tips on what he should do he really put into action on the labour day.
Justine is a sensational coach for any mother (or parent) looking for support, empowerment and information on the journey to parenthood.
Her tools are practical and useful; in particular, the positive affirmations track got me through the early stages of an induced labour without pain relief! She has supported me beyond the classes, remaining on-hand for concerns and checking in on me since the birth. I highly recommend her antenatal and hypnobirthing classes.
Justine provided a huge amount of value, both during the calls and afterwards with personal emails on anything that may have been helpful for our situation. These included breathing techniques, breastfeeding tips, hospital preparation, labour positions, caesarean preparation and a whole heap of resourceful books, links, videos and guidance for both mum and support partner roles. As the Dad, I was enlightened to and very thankful to have this guidance. We can't thank Justine enough for her teaching styles and value she provides
Just wanted to thank you for the classes – we did get some very valuable skills such as having a positive mindset going in around labour, pain and breast feeding. Also, when she is crying and we’re not sure what to do, it’s about problem solving and not getting frustrated or upset! Many many thanks,
Being a first time parent it is important to get educated information, to help make the right choices for your baby. Justine’s classes are excellent and teach you so much about what you can expect during birth. She makes it really fun and engaging for us dads to be. Recommend her sessions to anyone - including dads to be.
The focused birth classes are so worth it. Being first time parents there are so many unanswered questions and the classes give you the opportunity to learn, reassure and get excited. Very professional yet so comforting to be able to learn from a midwife with real experiences. The hypnosis recording element is wonderful and helps with connecting with your body and baby. I highly recommend soon to be parents to invest in the classes. You won’t be disappointed.
Katy and baby Jacy
Hi Justine, we wanted to introduce you to Jacob. He was born on Tuesday, and we couldn’t be more in love. We knew he would be facing some challenges after he was born, but are pleased to say after a short time in NICU he is doing really well. We are home now and taking it one step at a time. I can’t thank you enough for all of the incredible help you gave to both of us. After each appointment with you I felt more able to deal with Jacob’s diagnosis and really felt a complete transformation in how I was now excited about meeting him rather than so scared and emotional. The group classes really helped all the missing pieces into place. After the course we continued practicing all the techniques you taught us and loved relaxing to the hypnosis recordings.
I wouldn’t say I loved being in labour, but I was calm and in the end I relied on a couple of your affirmations and was so ecstatic when he was born. Thank you once again.

We have some news… Baby Mila has arrived. We had to share the news because we are so grateful for your help and support. My labour was so much better than I ever thought it could be. I’m sure you had a huge part to play in that. I’ll be in touch soon to share more photos and tell you all about it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Thank you Justine for your wonderful guidance in the lead up to having our first child. Our beautiful little girl is now 3 months old, smiling and growing quickly. What a blessing it has been to learn from you. Your expertise and passion for newborns is remarkable! Your help will never be forgotten. Sending you much love.
Amanda and Michael
We both would like to thank you for your fantastic classes and amazing support during the later stages of my pregnancy. You helped to reframe our thinking about a number of issues and eased our minds about things that were causing us a lot of anxiety, I cannot thank you enough!
Michelle and Jim
I would love to thank you and your course. I went into the induction process extremely calm and ready. I was already 3cm dilated before we started the induction and just had to have had my waters broken. My labour progressed extremely quickly, dilating to 8cm in an hour. Again I just wanted to thank you for all the information and support along the way! I do really think this course was amazing for Vian and I. Such valuable info. Will be able to use these techniques for the future.
Annie, Vian and Tori
I can't recommend Justine and the focused birth classes highly enough. Justine has such a wealth of experience from which to provide guidance and advice. As a first time Dad, not only did Justine help me understand the role I had to play, but she also equipped me with the knowledge, confidence and tools to do it well.
Hope you are well! I am excited to tell you that last Friday I had a baby girl at 7pm. Her name is Arianna. Due to a transverse lie, our ob thought ceasarean was best. I was so nervous but used your breathing techniques to get me over the line.
We really really enjoyed this course! 10/10 would recommend for future first time parents. I really enjoyed the activities for each week and it really changed my views on the language used around birth. I felt so calm going into labour and was genuinely excited! The birth was the most incredible experience ever. Hudson is such a laid back bubba. We are so thankful for all your guidance. We are lucky to have found just the right person to support us. Thank you Justine!

I have over 20 years experience as a midwife in the UK and Australia, working in both private and public hospitals. I have helped thousands of women in every scenario, from homebirths and water-births, births with complex issues, intervention, and caesarean births.
I currently work in a busy Melbourne Hospital, and am passionate about supporting women and families be as relaxed and confident as they can be whatever the circumstances. I divide my time as a midwife between the Birth Centre and the Child Birth Education Team. This means I am upto date with current research, policies and procedures when it comes to all things birth related.
In addition, I am a government accredited Clinical Hypnotherapist, with an Honours degree in Psychology. In my private practice I specialise in treating anxiety, trauma, fertility issues, pain management and phobias, as well as hypnobirthing techniques.
Bringing together these sets of skills, knowledge, and experience I can guide and prepare you to have the positive birth experience that you desire.
